Daily Routine of a Division One Collegiate Soccer Player
An Hour-By-Hour of a Typical Day of a Collegiate Women's Soccer Player:
A Day in the Life as a Division One Student Athlete at UNM
Time management is nothing but easy. Finding a balance between soccer, school, and a social life defines your success as a student-athlete. I always seem to find a few misconceptions from outsiders of our daily routine as athletes, as many are unaware how filled each day is with practice, treatment, study hall hours, meetings, sports rehab, and many other social activities in between.
Cami here, and my day may look a little different than Emily's, but this is my September Tuesday as a student athlete at the University of New Mexico:
7:15 AM
Rise and shine, it's time to train. I usually snooze a few times and grab a bite to eat before walking out the door for soccer practice. We all pile in the car together and ride to complex, which takes us about 8 minutes to get there. We show up around 7:50 for pre-training treatment, which includes taping ankles, heating pads on sore muscles, and any thing we need before training.
8:15 AM
Walk up to Robertson Field, our training facility. We have 15 minutes to warm up before practice starts at 8:30.
10:30 AM
Practice ends and we all walk down to the training room for treatments. My day looks a little different these days with my torn ACL, so I spend most of my time for treatment in the training room. Before my injury, this time was filled with 8 minute mandatory ice baths and stretching, and rushing my teammates to class at 11. I stay for rehab for a few hours after practice is over, doing many different muscle strengthening and range of motion exercises.
12:30 PM
My pre-surgery rehab begins after practice and ends around this time. I bag up my things super fast and get home to scramble up something to eat before class.
2:00-3:15 PM
I have a Consumer Behavior course in the business building at this time with Emily.
3:30-5:00 PM
Doctor's appointments in Tow Diehm Complex for my knee for pre-surgery meeting with my surgeon. This is what this specific day consisted of, but much of the time this is filled with study hall hours and meetings with our academic advisor. Freshman on the team are required to have 6 hours of time spent at study hall each week.
6:00 PM
Finally done for the day. My roommates (who are also my teammates) usually cook during the week for dinner. We try to eat together when we can. We spend the rest of the day doing homework, studying, or spending time with friends if we don't have too much to do. We usually spend most of this time working on online courses. Dealing with hydration and nutrition is also a hard thing to do with such a packed day. We try to eat as healthy as we can and drink as much as possible to stay hydrated for the games this weekend. What you prepare for now is a huge factor for Friday and Sunday.
10:30 PM
Bedtime if you're done with homework. Sleep to get up and do it all again the next day!
